UvA starts trial run for more efficient production of biofuel
On Friday, 23 March, the University of Amsterdam will open the first Photanol test production plant. The facility’s purpose is to test and design the best mass production method for the new biofuel Photanol.

'Energy from an unexpected angle' wins Sustainable University Award
On 19 March 2012, UvA employee Theo van Lieshout won the Sustainable University Award 2011-2012 for his project Energie uit onverwachte hoek (Energy from an unexpected angle). The winning idea seeks to utilise heat emissions for the climate control of buildings. The prize was awarded by University Professor Louise Fresco.

Three UvA professors named Crown-appointed members of Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands
The Dutch cabinet has named three University of Amsterdam (UvA) professors as Crown-appointed members of the Social Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). Barbara Baarsma, Aukje Nauta and Evert Verhulp will serve as council members from 1 April 2012 to 1 April 2014.

Saturday 17 March: Roeterseiland construction activities
The D-building water supply used for cooling will be connected to the existing refrigeration apparatus located at the enclosed grounds between the E-building and the G-building. These activities were originally scheduled for 10 and 11 March, but will now take place on 17 March.

Alexander Rinnooy Kan appointed University Professor of Economics and Business Studies
The University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Executive Board has appointed Dr A.H.G. Rinnooy Kan University Professor of Economics and Business, specifically focusing on change processes at the micro and macro level. The appointment is effective from 1 September 2012. Alexander Rinnooy Kan is currently president of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER).

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the joint second best Dutch university in the World Reputation Rankings 2012 compiled by Times Higher Education (THE). In the global rankings, the UvA is placed in the 71-80 group.

AMC researcher Ellen Laan receives honorary doctorate from KU Leuven
AMC researcher Ellen Laan received an honorary doctorate on 15 March from KU Leuven’s Faculty of Medicine. The doctorate was presented during a ceremony marking the 50 year anniversary of the university’s Institute for Family and Sexuality Sciences.
