Economics students organise congress on debt crisis
How do businesses and governments manage their risks during and after the European debt crisis? On Thursday, 26 April, the Financial Study Association Amsterdam (FSA) will hold the 16th FSA Congress in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. The theme is ‘Europe in distress – Managing risks during and after the sovereign debt crisis’.

International award for UvA archaeologist Joris Kila
UvA scholar Joris Kila will be awarded the 2012 Art Protection and Security Award jointly with Dr Karl von Habsburg. The award is presented annually by ARCA, the Association for Research into Crimes against Art. Last year’s award was presented to renowned British archaeologist Sir Colin Renfrew.

UvA researcher receives NWO grant for study on comprehensible language and health care
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a €250,000 grant to Dr Bas van den Putte of the UvA’s Amsterdam School of Communication Research. Van den Putte will use the grant to study health care information for young people with learning difficulties.

US subprime mortgages mainly issued to middle class households
Most subprime mortgages in the US were issued to members of the middle classes. The current perception that most subprime mortgages in the US were sold to lower-income groups is thus inaccurate. This is one of the conclusions of a recently published book entitled ‘Subprime Cities: The Political Economy of Mortgage Markets’, compiled under the editorial supervision of Manuel Aalbers, assistant professor in Social Geography and Planning at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

UvA prepared to reconsider plans for new development of Binnengasthuisterrein

UvA researchers establish record with exceptionally bright turquoise fluorescent protein
UvA researchers have succeeded in synthesising a turquoise-coloured fluorescent protein that is brighter than any other monomeric fluorescent protein. This feature makes it possible to more effectively study interactions between proteins in living cells.
