Louise Gunning appointed president of Executive Board UvA and HvA
Prof. Louise Gunning-Schepers has been appointed president of the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) by the Supervisory Boards of the two institutions. The appointment is effective as of 1 April 2012.

Use of antidepressants during pregnancy causes structural changes in the brain of the unborn child
The use of certain antidepressants by pregnant women influences the development of the brain of their foetus, according to researchers of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The results of their research was published in 'Neuropharmacology'.

UvA communication researchers start research on chemotherapy awareness
On World Cancer Day, 4 February, communication researchers at the University of Amsterdam will start research on chemotherapy awareness in the Netherlands. The research, ‘Chemotherapy: How much do you know about it?’, was commissioned by Public Eyes Healthcare Communications.

Prestigious Vici grants for three UvA researchers
Three scientists from the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Science have received a Vici grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). They will each receive €1,500,000 to conduct research in the coming five years.

Major NWO grant for researching paints used in fine arts
Within the framework of Science4Arts programme, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has provided funding for the project titled ‘How paint changes: consequences for conservation, presentation and preservation of paintings from Van Eyck to Mondriaan'. The UvA (Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science) will coordinate the research.

Hendrik Casimir-Ziegler Research Grant for Alfred Zerres
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künsten (The North Rhine-Westphalia Academy for Sciences and Arts ) have awarded a Hendrik Casimir-Karl Ziegler Research Grant 2012 to Alfred Zerres. He will use this grant to work as a guest researcher at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) for one year.

UvA classicist Irene de Jong’s Iliad commentary to be published in Cambridge series
In mid-January, Cambridge University Press will be publishing the latest title in its prestigious Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics series - or ‘Green-Yellows’, as they are known in academic circles (on account of the book jacket colours) - written by University of Amsterdam (UvA) professor of Classical Greek Language and Literature Dr Irene de Jong.

Black hole fires ‘gas bullets’ into space
