Louise Gunning appointed president of Executive Board UvA and HvA

Prof. Louise Gunning-Schepers has been appointed president of the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) by the Supervisory Boards of the two institutions. The appointment is effective as of 1 April 2012.

The SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research section of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has expressed its preference for Science Park Amsterdam (SPA) as the new location for its facilities currently housed in Utrecht.

Use of antidepressants during pregnancy causes structural changes in the brain of the unborn child

The use of certain antidepressants by pregnant women influences the development of the brain of their foetus, according to researchers of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The results of their research was published in 'Neuropharmacology'.

UvA communication researchers start research on chemotherapy awareness

On World Cancer Day, 4 February, communication researchers at the University of Amsterdam will start research on chemotherapy awareness in the Netherlands.  The research, ‘Chemotherapy: How much do you know about it?’, was commissioned by Public Eyes Healthcare Communications.

Prestigious Vici grants for three UvA researchers

Three scientists from the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Science have received a Vici grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). They will each receive €1,500,000 to conduct research in the coming five years.

Identifying the conceptual roots of contemporary art

In his dissertation Camiel van Winkel identifies the conceptual roots of contemporary art. He shows that the art of today as a whole is essentially ‘post-conceptual’. The production and reception of art are determined by circumstances and factors that conceptual artists in the years 1965-75 were the first to announce.

The role of ICT in secondary school science education

This research examines the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in secondary mathematics and science education. In many school projects, students could apply ICT for doing research in a way that resembles research by scientists and practitioners.
