The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff engages in teaching as well as research. There are over 1,100 employees in the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the six Departments in the FMG. Research and teaching are carried out by dedicated institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences. A new research institute for all the social sciences is being established in 2010, the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), as the administrative unit for researchers of three departments: Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, and Human Geography, Planning and Development Studies.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology

1.0 FTE (38 hours per week)

The new assistant professor will be expected to spend 60 percent of his or her time on teaching and 40 percent on research.

Tasks

  • strengthening the broad profile of social and cultural anthropology at the University of Amsterdam
  • teaching general, specialist and methodological courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, supervising undergraduate students and (assisting in) the supervision of graduate students
  • developing, carrying out and supervising anthropological and interdisciplinary research programmes
  • developing research proposals for external funding
  • actively contributing to the development of the discipline in national and international contexts by participating in national and international academic networks and by publishing internationally.

Requirements

  • research profile that addresses the priorities of the AISSR Research Programme "Globalizing Culture and the Quest for Belonging: Ethnographies of the Everyday" (see the website of the AISSR for further information)
  • completed doctoral thesis in the field of social or cultural anthropology
  • strong publication record
  • broad knowledge of general social science
  • mastery of ethnographic research methods
  • demonstrable ability to teach and motivate students at basic and advanced levels
  • possession of a Basic Teaching Qualification (or equivalent) or willingness to acquire this certificate within two years
  • fluency in Dutch and English (candidates with no Dutch proficiency must be able to teach in Dutch within two years), being able to teach in Dutch immediately will be considered an advantage.

Appointment

Depending on qualifications and experience, the gross monthly salary will range from €3,195 (scale 11) to €4,970 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week).
