The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strong international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. There are almost 1,250 employees affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 6,800 students.
The Faculty of Humanities comprises six departments: History, Archaeology and Area Studies; Art, Religion and Cultural Sciences; Media Studies; Dutch Studies; Language and Literature, and Philosophy. Each department is composed of sections comprising one or more professors and a number of other academics working in the relevant field.
The Philosophy Department comprises four sections: The Philosophical Tradition in Context; Logic and Language: Mind, Body, and Behavior; Philosophy and Public Affairs; and Critical Cultural Theory: Art, Culture and Media.
To strengthen its senior staff, the Philosophy Department, specifically the section Philosophy and Public Affairs, invites applications for a:
Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor in Political and Social Philosophy

Teaching activities relate to the BA, connecting MA and the research-based MA in Philosophy, as well as the PhD-courses of the Netherlands School for Research in Practical Philosophy. A number of electives are also offered and the section participates in minors (For the courses currently provided, see the UvA's digital course catalogue at: www.studiegids.uva.nl).
The section's research focuses on practical philosophy and its history. More specifically, the candidate is expected to have firm knowledge of the history of political and social philosophy; to have firm knowledge of the most relevant contemporary normative political and social philosophical approaches; to have shown to be interested in interdisciplinary research; to be able to apply his/her philosophical knowledge to problems in contemporary societies and to be interested not only in academic but also in broader non-academic publications.
The research undertaken by the new associate professor will be part of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), sub-programme Philosophy and Public Affairs. For the period 2009-2012 the Faculty of Humanities has chosen the following focus points for its research: Cultural Heritage and Identities; Cultural Transformations and Globalization; Cognitive Modelling and Learnability (for further information about the faculty's research programme, see www.hum.uva.nl/research).
Requirements
- A PhD in social or political Philosophy
- Teaching experience, preferably at various levels of university education
- Outstanding research skills, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journals and academic publishers
- Fundraising experience, e.g. acquisition of research projects through government agencies or the private sector
- Experience in supervising PhD research
- Proven leadership qualities; experience in administration, organisation and coordination of university education and research
- Enthusiasm, an interdisciplinary attitude, a strong team spirit and the ability to motivate team members
- Flexibility, readiness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation and multidisciplinary development
- Excellent command of both Dutch and English; preferably international teaching experience. If Dutch is not the native language, an active and passive command should be acquired within two years of appointment
Appointment
This is a tenure track appointment, which means that the initial appointment will be two years. Depending on teaching evaluations and professional assessment, tenure will be granted after two years. Gross monthly salary for a fulltime appointment (38 hours a week) will be between €4,428 (scale 13) and €5,920 (scale 14).
